Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G./Biggie Smalls
May 21, 1972 - March 9, 1997

I came to know Biggie’s music through my older brother Dave. I was in elementary school and my parents were not home much because they both had full time jobs. When my parents weren’t there Dave was, along with all of his friends and music. Music has always been prevalent to the ears and hearts of my siblings and I. It helped us all through our own struggles in addition to all of our family struggles.

I remember my brother would play Biggie’s albums. Dave and his friends would be out back listening to his music, smokin’ stogies and god knows what else, drinking, cutting hair, bull shitting - doing what guys do best. If, at the time, my mom knew what they were doing and what they were listening to in front of us kids, she would have had a heart attack because all of Biggie’s songs talked about drugs, sex and money. Things elementary school kids should NOT be listening to. But it didn’t matter to me. I couldn’t even really make sense of what he was saying anyway because of the adult content; it just sounded good.

As that young girl, I came to love listening to “Juicy” off Biggie’s ‘Ready To Die’ album. It was 1994 and that song hit the top of the charts! Everyone was singing along. This one is for you Biggie!
